Coaching
NEW MEMBERS COACHING
One of the aims of Dalgety Bay Bowling Club is to grow the participation in the sport of bowls. To achieve this, the Club runs a program of coaching for both junior and adults wishing to take up the sport.
Our Coaching Team is headed up by a Coaching Coordinator and a team of excellent qualified coaches, all of whom have passed Bowls Scotland Level 0 and/or Level 1 coaching courses. Some of our coaches have also taken an "Inclusive Bowls" course which includes the use of mobility aids for the less physically able and visually impaired.
All inexperienced NEW members must undergo coaching then once they are signed off, the new member will be free to enter all club competitions and play whenever they wish.
The club has equipment to aid your training as well as a selection of used bowls and shoes for you to start with until you wish to purchase your own.
Juniors are welcome and are supported by our Child & Welfare Protection Officer whose details are on the Contact Us page.
If you are a new member who would like coaching then please get in touch with our Coaching Coordinator whose details are on the Contact Us page.
If you are unsure or just need some encouragement, please come along and one of our friendly coaches will be happy to help and provide everything you need to enjoy this wonderful social game.
Coaching Plan
Our Coaching Plan will allow new members, adult and junior, to progress through various levels over a number of sessions, building up confidence slowly but surely.
BUYING BOWLS
Once you are hooked on bowls (and it won't take long), the next decision is to buy your own set of bowls and there is a lot of choice out there. We would suggest buying pre-owned bowls to begin with until you establish the correct size, grip, bias etc. for you before you splurge out on a brand new set. The following guide may assist you in the choice of a bowl in the first instance.
GROUP COACHING SESSIONS
Adult Coaching
We have group coaching sessions for our new members every Thursday evening from 6pm-8pm starting early May. If you cannot make this then we can offer Sunday mornings or an alternative date/time by prior arrangement. The coaches are flexible and will try to work around your free time and green availability. Group numbers will be limited to allow more one-to-one coaching.
Please contact Coaching Coordinator, Jim Smith, for more information (his details can be found on the Contact Us page).
Junior Coaching (8-17 year olds)
We hold group Junior coaching sessions starting early May on Monday afternoons 3.30-4.30pm (during term time) or Wednesday mornings 10.30am-11.30am (during summer holidays).
Please contact Coaching Coordinator, Jim Smith, for more information (his details can be found on the Contact Us page).
MOBILITY AIDS - USE OF BOWLING ARMS & LAUNCHERS
The club has purchased bowling arms in 3 different sizes (small, medium and large) and some bowl/jack launchers. These are designed to assist bowlers with mobility issues such as lower limb weakness making bending difficult. They also have the benefit of protecting the green from damage caused by poor bowling delivery techniques that make dents in the green and have a negative impact on all members.
Our coaches have undertaken formal training on these mechanical aids and will offer coaching to any members who wish to try them. Please note that due to the high cost of the bowling arms, these aids will be kept for training use only and it is expected that bowlers would purchase their own bowling arm once they find the correct size for them. The bowls launchers can be made available to members once they have undergone the required training on their use.
Please do not be offended if you are asked to try these bowling aids - any bowler who has a poor delivery with the potential to cause damage to the green may be asked to try a bowling aid and/or be referred to a coach to help improve delivery technique.
